What's In A Name?

Happy National Learn What
Your Name Means Day!

Wow. That is a mouth full. And probably a holiday you have never even heard of. But when we found out about this fun little holiday, we knew we were 100% on board with it. Mainly because we believe names can be powerful.

Now don't think we are the judgmental type, thinking you are a horrible person if you don't know what your name means, but as we see in scripture our name can pack a powerful punch of purpose. Here is a quick run down of some people in the Bible who actually got a name change:

  • Abram, which means exalted father, was renamed by God Abraham, which means the father of many.
  • The apostle Joseph was referred to by his friends as Barnabas, to give him the title son of encouragement.
  • Jesus gave a dual name to James and John, Boanerges, which means sons of thunder.
  • Jesus also changed Simon's name to Cephas, or Peter, meaning rock.
  • Check out this name change that happened between parents (Jacob and Rachel) in Genesis 35:18: "As she breathed her last- for she was dying- she named her son Ben-Oni (son of my trouble). But his father named him Benjamin (son of my right hand).
Wow! Of course there are more examples than just these, but those names are powerful! That last one, Benjamin, really hit me. How transformative to not be referred to as the son of my mother's trouble, but the son of my father's right hand!

I love the story of Jabez from scripture. If you haven't read it, it is super short but tells us a lot. It goes like this:

Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, "Because I bore him in pain." And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, "Oh, that you would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!" So God granted him what he requested.
1 Chronicles 4:9-10

A name carries purpose. It carries destiny. Jabez knew what his name meant, and he prayed to God to change his name in a way; he wanted God to prevent the meaning of his name from being his reality. He didn't want to be someone who caused pain to anyone. Now all of you mommas out there are probably being a little hard on Jabez's mom. What child ISN'T bore in pain, right? Well regardless of the situation, the point is Jabez wanted his name to mean something else. And as the bible says, God granted him what he requested

Do you know what your name means? Does it reflect how you want to be known? Does it give you purpose and remind you of your destiny? Maybe it doesn't. Maybe the meaning of your name doesn't jive with the legacy you want to leave. That's okay! But write down what you want to be known for, and live out that purpose statement.

As a fun little way to celebrate this random holiday, we want to give you a gift! Fill out the form below and we will send you a beautiful handwritten piece of art with your name (or the name of your choice) with the meaning, so you can hang it somewhere to be reminded of your divine purpose described by your name.
