10 Scriptures We're Memorizing

Let me just quickly preface. I always have to, don't I? Scripture memorization is a spiritual discipline that I have not practiced as much as I should in my adult life. As a kid, Bible Quiz was a huge chunk of my life and therefore scripture memorization was as well. I had a large portion of the Bible memorized by the age of 12. Bible college only added to this foundation. While I am thankful for this amazing foundation and that these words have stayed with me in my heart and my head, I recognize also that it is a discipline I should continue to grow in and maintain. I will say that just from reading some of my go-to scriptures over and over again, I've all but memorized them...but even still...I want there to be intentionality behind it. Sometimes I think I should read my Bible and know my Bible like someone is going to take it away tomorrow and I might never have access to another copy again. Because what if that were the case--it could be. I have got to know God's Word inside and out. Like really know it. And that's what we're doing here. You'll also notice that I am memorizing mostly in the Message version. I know that everyone doesn't love it, but the words really resonate with me. Most of these passages I know roughly from reading and other versions, but I wanted to intentionally take them to memory in this way.

1. Romans 2:4 (The MSG)
"God is kind, but he's not soft. In kindness he takes us firmly by the hand and leads us into a radical life-change."

2. 1 Corinthians 15:30-34 (The MSG)
"Do you think I'd do this if I wasn't convinced of your resurrection and mine as guaranteed by the resurrected Messiah, Jesus? Not on your life! It's resurrection, resurrection, resurrection that undergirds what I do and what I say, the way i live...Think straight. Awaken to the holiness of life. No more playing fast and loose with resurrection facts. Ignorance of God is a luxury you can't afford in times like these..."

3. Habakkuk 3:17-19 (The MSG)
Though the cherry trees don't blossom and the strawberries don't ripen, though the apples are worm-eaten and the what fields stunted, though the sheep pens are sheepless and the cattle barns empty, I'm singing joyful praise to God, I'm turning cartwheels of praise to my Savior God. Counting on God's Rule to prevail, I take heart and gain strength, I run like a deer, I feel like I'm king of the mountain!"

4. Proverbs 3:3-12 (The MSG)
Don’t lose your grip on Love and Loyalty.
Tie them around your neck; carve their initials on your heart.
Earn a reputation for living well
in God’s eyes and the eyes of the people.

Trust God from the bottom of your heart;
don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
he’s the one who will keep you on track.
Don’t assume that you know it all.
Run to God! Run from evil!
Your body will glow with health,
your very bones will vibrate with life!
Honor God with everything you own;
give him the first and the best.
Your barns will burst,
your wine vats will brim over.
But don’t, dear friend, resent God’s discipline;
don’t sulk under his loving correction.
It’s the child he loves that God corrects;
a father’s delight is behind all this.

5. Isaiah 61:1-4
The Spirit of God, the Master, is on me because God anointed me. He sent me to preach good news to the poor, heal the heartbroken, announce freedom to all captives, pardon all prisoners. God sent me to announce the year of his grace—a celebration of God’s destruction of our enemies— and to comfort all who mourn, to care for the needs of all who mourn in Zion, give them bouquets of roses instead of ashes, messages of joy instead of news of doom, a praising heart instead of a languid spirit.

1. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

2. Psalms 16:5-11 (The MSG)
My choice is you, God, first and only. And now I find I'm your choice!
You set me up with a house and yard. And then you made me your heir!
The wise counsel God gives when I'm awake is confirmed by my sleeping heart.
Day and night I'll stick with God; I've got a good thing going and I'm not letting go.
I'm happy from the inside out and from the outside in, I'm firmly formed.
You canceled my ticket to hell -- that's not my destination!
Now you've got my feet on the life path, all radiant from the shining of your face.
Ever since you took my hand, I'm on the right way.

3. Romans 8:18 (NIV)
I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

4. Galatians 5:1 (NIV)
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

5. Ephesians 1:4-6 (The MSG)
Long before He laid down earth's foundations, He had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of His love, to be made whole and holy by His love. Long, long ago He decided to adopt us into His family through Jesus Christ. He wanted us to enter into the celebration of His lavish gift-giving by the hand of His beloved Son.

What scriptures are you memorizing?
What verse has been speaking to you lately?
